Pornhub has released their 9th Year in Review, an extensive breakdown of all things pornographic, with 2022 search trends across various countries and demographics. Some key VR porn findings below, and a Russian porn conspiracy theory here.
Key findings
According to Pornhub’s findings, topping this year’s trends is Reality porn, but unfortunately for us that’s not Virtual Reality (more on that below).
“The Reality category grew by +169% to become one of the Top 20 categories, while popularity of the Amateur category has dropped slightly by –19%. Our statisticians theorize that as more amateur models have become full-time performers, the quality of their videos has improved, but visitors are still seeking a real homemade porn experience.”
Comparatively, the Transgender category grew by +75% to become the 7th most popular category worldwide.
Close behind these two categories are ‘Group sex’, ‘Outdoors’, ‘Positions’, ‘Feet’ and ‘Femdom’.
Regarding age demographics, Pornhub’s average visitor age remained 37 for 2022, with the 18 to 24 group growing by +2 percentage points, and the 35 to 44 age group dropping by –2% percentage points.
The study shows that Gen Z visitors aged 18 to 24 are +115% more likely to watch Threesome videos, +72% more into Cosplay and +58% more into Cartoon videos.
Gen Y visitors aged 25 to 34 are +143% more into Asian porn, +58% more into Feet and +33% more likely to view videos with Tattooed Women.
Gen X visitors aged 35 to 54 are +65% more interested in Creampie videos, +19% more into fisting and +17% more for viewing BBW (big beautiful woman).
And Boomers over the age of 55 are nearly twice as likely to watch Handjob videos, and +39% more interested in Small Tits.
What about Virtual Reality?
There’s not a lot about Virtual Reality in this years report, despite significant efforts of the website to embrace the new medium, including giving away 10,000 VR goggles to users in 2016 and it being reported as one of the fastest growing categories of videos soon after.
From this years report, Gen Z visitors (those ones aged 18-24 who also like cosplay, cartoons and threesomes) are twice as likely to view Virtual Reality videos and also vertical video porn. This is not surprising considering that generations’ general uptake in Virtual Reality headsets.
The survey also reveals viewers in the United States are +143% more likely to watch Virtual Reality porn compared to other countries, which is also not surprising, although Pornhub has previously reported that VR was proportionately more popular in countries like Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Taiwan.
It may also be bad timing for the reports release, considering in previous years VR porn consumption has spiked just around Christmas (presumably when the Gen Z’s are getting their presents). The 2023 Pornhub report could be quite interesting for VR.
